In the hills east of Rome, hot springs carry dissolved limestone to the surface and leave it there. Over centuries it accumulates, compresses, crystallizes. What becomes travertine is time made visible.
The Romans quarried this exact formation to build their city. The Colosseum. The thermal baths. The façades that still stand two thousand years on. The Roman Plinth is cut from the same geological event.
Once placed, a stone object rarely moves. It becomes part of the room's logic. The light changes around it through the day. It holds the temperature of the space and returns it slowly. This is what living with stone means.
Not all thermal water carries the same mineral load. When the calcium-rich springs at Tivoli mixed with volcanic sediment from the Alban Hills — ash, silica, fine particulate from centuries of geothermal activity — the resulting limestone shifted. What reads as warm ivory in pure carbonate conditions moved toward dove grey, slate, the color of stone that has absorbed a different mineral history. The grey is not a surface treatment. It is a chemical record.
Grey travertine is the atypical variant of this formation. Its tone makes it distinctly architectural — the coloring sits closer to concrete, to the aggregate used in modernist construction, to the material palette of Tadao Ando or Herzog and de Meuron. It reads as cold in the geological sense: formed under conditions distinct from the warmer beige deposits. The block is cut to the same dimensions as the rest of the Roman Plinth series — 17.7" × 12.6" × 12.6" (45 × 32 × 32 cm), 121 lbs (55 kg) — but occupies a room differently.
Four sides are left raw: the pore structure visible, the horizontal strata legible, the compressed mineral record exposed. The top surface is sanded matte. Against concrete floors or dark oak, the grey disappears into the architecture — which is precisely when a piece of stone furniture does its best work.

Each piece is quarried directly at Tivoli, in the same formation that supplied the Roman Colosseum. The open pores, sedimentary banding, and calcite veining are geological — they cannot be replicated in composite. A certificate of origin is available on request.
Document any damage on delivery with photographs and notify us within 48 hours. We will arrange a full replacement at no cost to you. Every piece is individually crated and fully insured in transit.
Orders may be cancelled within 24 hours of confirmation for a full refund. After this window, your piece enters production — custom stone orders cannot be cancelled once cutting begins.
Each piece is cut to order from the active quarry in Tivoli, shaped by stonemasons, and shipped directly to you. There is no warehouse inventory. The wait is the cost of the thing being made for you specifically.
