In the hills east of Rome, hot springs carry dissolved limestone to the surface and leave it there. Over centuries it accumulates, compresses, crystallizes. What becomes travertine is time made visible.
The Romans quarried this exact formation to build their city. The Colosseum. The thermal baths. The façades that still stand two thousand years on. The Roman Plinth is cut from the same geological event.
Once placed, a stone object rarely moves. It becomes part of the room's logic. The light changes around it through the day. It holds the temperature of the space and returns it slowly. This is what living with stone means.
Iron oxide does not negotiate. When the thermal springs at Tivoli carried ferrous minerals in solution, those minerals oxidized on contact with oxygen — and stained the forming calcium carbonate in shades ranging from warm ochre to deep rust. Each stratum in this travertine records a distinct mineral event: a different iron concentration, a different water temperature, a different season in the geological sequence. The result is stone that reads as layered because it was formed in layers.
The red coloration is not uniform — and it was never meant to be. Bands of warm rust alternate with veins of cream and brown-ochre, the visible record of a spring that changed composition over thousands of years of deposition. This is the same Tivoli formation that supplied stone for the Colosseum, but what the iron-rich pockets produced here is rarer: a travertine that carries chromatic history in its cross-section, legible on the raw sides of the plinth.
At 17.7" × 12.6" × 12.6" (45 × 32 × 32 cm) and 121 lbs (55 kg), this is a piece with physical presence. The four raw sides expose the full mineral stratigraphy — the pore structure, the color variation, the strata that no two blocks replicate in the same sequence. The matte-sanded top provides a working surface without interrupting the geological reading. In a room built on restraint, this is the object that holds the eye.

Each piece is quarried directly at Tivoli, in the same formation that supplied the Roman Colosseum. The open pores, sedimentary banding, and calcite veining are geological — they cannot be replicated in composite. A certificate of origin is available on request.
Document any damage on delivery with photographs and notify us within 48 hours. We will arrange a full replacement at no cost to you. Every piece is individually crated and fully insured in transit.
Orders may be cancelled within 24 hours of confirmation for a full refund. After this window, your piece enters production — custom stone orders cannot be cancelled once cutting begins.
Each piece is cut to order from the active quarry in Tivoli, shaped by stonemasons, and shipped directly to you. There is no warehouse inventory. The wait is the cost of the thing being made for you specifically.
