In the hills east of Rome, hot springs carry dissolved limestone to the surface and leave it there. Over centuries it accumulates, compresses, crystallizes. What becomes travertine is time made visible.

The Romans quarried this exact formation to build their city. The Colosseum. The thermal baths. The façades that still stand two thousand years on. The Roman Plinth is cut from the same geological event.

Once placed, a stone object rarely moves. It becomes part of the room's logic. The light changes around it through the day. It holds the temperature of the space and returns it slowly. This is what living with stone means.

Travertine forms slowly. In Tivoli, water rich in calcium emerges from limestone, deposits its carbonate over centuries, and leaves behind a stone the Romans built their city with.

This piece is cut from a single block of Roman travertine, quarried near Tivoli, where the same beds supplied the columns and façades that still stand. Sides are left raw, revealing the natural pores, calcite veining, and sedimentary strata of the formation. The top is honed flat: smooth to the hand, dry underfoot. More on travertine.

The Plinth occupies the ground like architecture. Set beside a reading chair, beneath a window facing east, or at the foot of a bed: the stone receives the light differently through the day. It carries a lamp, a stack of books, a glass of water through the night.

Living with stone is not the same as living with wood. It does not warm to your touch. It holds the room’s temperature, then releases it back. Over years, a patina settles into the honed surface: the trace of every glass, every page, every quiet hour.

Quarried from the calcium-rich hot spring deposits of Tivoli, in the hills east of Rome, this stone has been in continuous use since antiquity. The sedimentary formation produces the characteristic horizontal banding and open void pockets that are the geological signature of the material. Warm in tone, adaptable in context, it develops a patina that deepens its provenance over time.
