The Roman Colonnade Console, Grey Veined Marble
Cut to order in Tivoli. Six weeks from quarry to your floor. White-glove delivery included.
Roman architecture borrowed from the Greeks and then exceeded them. The colonnade — two columns carrying a horizontal span — is the structural sentence that built Western interiors.
Two turned cylindrical column pedestals in grey veined marble carry a long rectangular slab. The marble is Bardiglio or similar — a grey ground with white mineral veins that formed under tectonic compression in the Apuan Alps. The honed matte finish keeps the surface from reflecting. The veining reads clearly across the full length of the top slab in diffused light.
Placed against a wall in a hallway, the console reads as a quotation from the history of proportion. The threshold it marks is not decorative — it is architectural. The scale of the object sets the scale of the room.
