A spec sheet for stone furniture can tell you the material name, the finish, the dimensions, and the weight. What it usually does not tell you is whether the stone runs through the entire piece or only across its surface. That distinction, solid stone versus stone veneer, determines how the furniture ages, how damage presents and how it can be repaired, and what the phrase "natural stone furniture" actually means in practice.
What Stone Veneer Is
Stone veneer is a thin slice of quarried stone, standard thickness ranges from 3/4 inch to 1-1/2 inches (approximately 19 to 38 mm) depending on the application, adhered to a substrate. The substrate is typically MDF, plywood, or a composite panel. The visible surface is genuine stone; the structural core of the piece is not. Stone veneer furniture weighs substantially less than solid stone equivalents, which can be an advantage in upper-floor applications or where freight cost is a constraint.
In flooring, stone veneer over a rigid substrate is a legitimate specification that reduces weight and cost while delivering stone's visual character. In furniture, the calculation is more complicated, because furniture encounters use at a different scale than flooring, and because furniture damage is more visible and more localised than floor wear.
What Solid Travertine Is
A solid travertine side table is cut from a single block or slab of stone. The material visible on the surface continues through the full thickness of the piece. There is no adhesive layer between stone and substrate, no composite core, no engineering of a stone appearance over a different structural material. The edge profile shows the same stone as the top. The underside is stone.
This continuity is significant for two reasons. First, a solid stone piece distributes structural load through the entire material cross-section, there are no bonded interfaces that can fail under stress or thermal cycling. When a vendor describes a piece as "stone top" rather than "solid stone," the distinction they are not making explicit is that only the top surface is stone. Both descriptions are accurate.
